BOATS ACROSS THE

GLOBE: GREGORY'S

ARCHIVE

by Jack Fiori

Boats Across the Globe

Boats are more than just transportation—they’re symbols of adventure, culture, and life by the water. Gregory, a passionate traveler and photographer, captured boats from all over the world, especially during his time in Greece. These images reflect the beauty and variety of boats and the places they belong to.

Boats Across the Globe: Gregory’s Archive is a project that dives into his incredible collection of photographs to showcase every image featuring a boat. Using a treasure-map-inspired world visualization, this project highlights where these boats were captured, with an “X” marking the spot on a global map. My goal is to celebrate Gregory’s travels and the universal connection people have with boats while giving you a fun and interactive way to explore this rich archive.

While organizing Gregory’s archive, I cataloged information about the location, type of boat, and the number of boat images taken in each area. As I mapped the data, an unexpected pattern emerged: the majority of images were from Greece, with other countries contributing unique clusters of boat types. The project uses color-coded "X" markers on a treasure-map-style world visualization to show the number of boats in each country. Clicking on an "X" zooms in on a treasure map of that specific country, where icons representing different types of boats (like rowboats, yachts, or fishing boats) mark the exact locations of the photos. Clicking on an icon reveals the actual image Gregory captured, offering a detailed and interactive look at the boats from his travels. This approach highlights both the diversity of boats and the regions where they are most commonly found, bringing Gregory's journeys to life in a fun and engaging way.

When organizing Gregory’s archive, the format included location, type of boat, number of boats photographed, and the exact spot where each photo was taken. Compared to simpler data like location alone, the boat-specific information revealed more diverse and interesting patterns. This variation comes from the wide range of boat types captured globally and the unique ways Gregory documented them, creating a rich and detailed picture of his travels through the lens of maritime life.

To stay organized while working on this project, I used a sorted Google Drive. The images were first categorized by location, then organized into folders for each type of boat, and finally broken down into individual photos. This system made it easy to navigate through Gregory’s vast archive and ensured that every boat, from rowboats to cruise ships, was accounted for and accurately placed on the treasure map.
